UP Health System - Portage offers several events as a service to you. Below you will find events to help you learn and take action toward a healthier you.
2020 Community Health Events
Our hospital is committed to ensuring the safety of our community. We are continuing to monitor the evolving COVID-19 situation and are taking the necessary steps to ensure that we are fully prepared to care for our community. Please see updates regarding Community Health events below.
January 11 – A Healthier You
Just in time for the New Year, an event focused on small ways to improve your health in big ways. Meet with nutrition, exercise and rehab specialists, try out exercise equipment and enter to win great prizes.
Heart Health by the Numbers - Feb 17 (Labs), Feb 19 (Presentation)
February is American Heart month. Celebrate by taking time out of your busy lives to focus on your heart. Heart-healthy screenings will be offered free of charge and reviewed by Dr. Sarah Pettibone, Family Medicine Physician at Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center. Learn tips on how to improve your health!
Great Bear Chase - March 7
Take part in this Swedetown Trail tradition by participating in one of the many ski races. Events include 50k Skiathlon, 50k freestyle or classic, 25k freestyle or classic and 10k freestyle or classic race.
5k fun run/walk/jog/shuffle at UP Health System Portage. This non-competitive event is free and encourages the whole community to get out and be active. Registration for 2020 coming soon. On-site registration will also be available on the day of the race.
ACES Day (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) – May 6
ACES Day is an international celebration of health emphasizing physical activity among children. Join us by getting 30 minutes of activity throughout the day!
Join us for an evening devoted to topics just for men. The evening will include great information, free health screenings, dinner and socializing.
Board-certified dermatologists provide brief examinations of unusual moles or lesions for signs of skin cancer. By appointment only.
Annual event highlighting services and programs offered within our community. The event includes free screenings, healthy food, giveaways, hands-on demonstrations and more.
Choose from a ½ marathon, 10-mile walk or run or a 5-mile walk or run in this longstanding community event that ends in downtown Hancock. Visit here for more information.

Things are going to look different this year, so please take note of the changes:
- Participants can start the 5k event anytime between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.
- There will not be any day of registrations - all attendees must register online, in advance
- Check-in will take place outside, in front of the hospital.
- Access to the hospital will be available for those needing to use the restrooms. Anyone entering the building will be screened and required to wear masks while in the facility.
- We will not be able to provide refreshments and snacks after the event this year. Please bring your own water bottles.
- We will be practicing social distancing guidelines and maintaining 6 feet of distance from those outside of your households.
- Participants will be asked to mask until they begin walking/running.
This is a great event for the entire family! Participants will meet in front of UP Health System - Portage in Hancock to check-in. Walkers and runners will head out on Portage Dr, then west onto Ingot to connect with the Hancock/Calumet trail. Participants will continue on the trail until Tomasi Rd where they will loop around to finish at the hospital. An alternative route will be selected if the Hancock/Calumet trail is snow-covered.
