Currently, the threat of COVID-19 in our community seems to be under control, allowing our community to start re-opening and UPHS – Portage to begin gradually resuming time-sensitive, non-urgent procedures.
For some, this change is a welcome return to maintaining personal health and addressing medical issues. For others, this news may cause anxiety about safety. I’d like to address these concerns with the hope of relieving fears that might make people overly cautious about seeking care and treatment.

UP Health System - Portage announced that it has received testing supplies to perform an in-house molecular test to help diagnose patients with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). In an effort to help address limited COVID-19 testing capacity and provide more timely results for patients, UPHS - Portage has started analyzing test results in its in-house laboratory

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a treatment that fragments kidney stones without the need for surgery. Shock waves transmitted through the skin shatter the stone with little effect on surrounding tissue. Its variable shockwave frequency and multiple power levels allow for efficient treatment of kidney stones with less pain for patients.

UP Health System - Portage announced that it has been awarded five stars in the latest round of Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). UPHS - Portage's Overall Hospital Quality 5-Star Rating puts it in the top 11% of all hospitals in the U.S. with respect to patient safety and the overall patient experience. Only 407 of the more than 3,500 hospitals rated received five stars.

UP Health System - Portage is pleased to welcome Keith Wright, DO, back to the Keweenaw to join it's Internal Medicine Clinic. Dr. Wright earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, then went on to complete his Family Practice Residency at Mercy General Health Partners. Dr. Wright is Board-certified in Family Practice.
