HANCOCK — Portage Health asks the public to give of themselves in various ways at "Save a Life" Day from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 7 at its main campus in Hancock.

Representatives from Michigan Blood - National Bone Marrow Registry will be present to take cheek swabs for those wishing to add their names to the bone marrow registry. The swab process is painless and takes no more than a few minutes. You could be the match for one of thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases waiting for a match to save their life.

Also during the October 7 event, the public can also help Portage Health in its efforts to add 400 new names to the Organ Donor registry by the end of 2010; our current standings are at 275 new registrations. A donor registration station will be on-site for those who wish to register on the spot. Bring your valid Michigan's driver's license to add your name to the list. At end-of-life, your organs could save the life of up to eight people, and enrich the lives of many more.

Finally, representatives from Marquette General Health System's U.P. Regional Blood Center will be taking appointments for those who wish to give blood. A volunteer donation of a pint of whole blood directly benefits as many as four patients living in the Upper Peninsula.

No appointment is necessary. For more information, call 483-1561.
