Each location has board-certified physicians and allied-health providers, the latest in imaging technology, convenient parking, and dedicated staff to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Express Care

While we’re proud of the team of family-medicine providers we have available to you, we’re also pleased to offer Express Care as a quick, cheap and convenient way to get the healthcare you need at the moment you need it. Emergency Medicine

Just like Portage Health was the first area hospital to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons, our emergency department was the first in the state to be verified as a Level 3 Trauma Center by the ACS. This verification means that even in the worst of situations, our staff will be prepared and provide you with the highest quality care possible.

Shifra joins family medicine staff in Ontonagon
The Ontonagon Community Health Center recently welcomed Rebecca Shifra, FNP, to its staff of family-medicine providers. Shifra joins Dr. Gerald Takala at the clinic, which is co-operated by Portage Health and Marquette General Health System. “My goal is to get to know my patients and work with them to maximize their health,” Shifra said. ”I like working with patients to develop an individualized plan of preventative care to get the best results.”
Stacey Carpenter, DO, joins Portage Health Family Medicine
Portage Health is proud to introduce Stacey Carpenter, DO, as the newest member of its family medicine team. Dr. Carpenter will begin seeing patients in late September. Trained in osteopathic medicine, Dr. Carpenter will provide a full spectrum of primary care services at Portage Health’s main campus, with a special interest in pediatrics, women’s health, manual medicine and skin care.

Portage Health scores above region, state and national averages in patient satisfaction
Portage Health’s commitment to service excellence was rewarded in the most recent data from the HCAHPS survey, with the highest ratings in the Upper Peninsula.The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. The survey collects answers to 10 questions from patients, and compares hospitals nationwide. Portage Health averaged 79.2 percent with best possible answers, which is considerably higher than U.P (70.5 percent) state (71.1 percent) and national (70.7 percent) averages.
Portage Health in top 18 percent nationwide, according to The Joint Commission
Portage Health was named one of the “2011 Top Performers on Key Quality Measures” by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. This recognition places Portage Health in the top 18 percent of hospitals nationwide. The Hancock-based hospital is one of only three hospitals in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to receive the honor and one of 13 statewide. Of those hospitals, Portage Health was one of nine in the state and the only in the U.P. to be recognized in multiple categories.
Portage Health earns “A” Grade from The Leapfrog Group
Portage Health’s commitment to excellence was recognized with an “A” in the latest Hospital Safety Score grading by The Leapfrog Group. “Receiving the highest grade possible from a credible and neutral source is tremendously rewarding for us,” said Jim Bogan, president/CEO of Portage Health. “Our staff is committed to providing the best possible experience for our patients, and ratings like this validate our efforts.” The “A” ranking was awarded to 37 Michigan hospitals, including two others in the Upper Peninsula.
University Center expansion and renovation complete
After a year of construction, the Portage Health-University Center renovation and addition is complete. The number of exam and procedure rooms has doubled, the waiting room is more than double the size and offers a more comfortable experience, and the Apothecary has a modern look that allows patients easy access to pharmacists.
Effort towards patient-centered medical home pays off with designation
The effort of Portage Health over the past two years was rewarded this week as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan designated three Portage Health clinics as patient-centered medical home (PCMH) clinics.
Transition to electronic medical records completed
Patient-centered care at Portage Health took a major step forward as Portage Health Medical Group upgraded to electronic medical records.
