HANCOCK — Portage Health invites the community to participate in the Michigan Harvest Gathering, a food and fundraising drive that is held each autumn to help Michigan families.

During the month of October, Portage Health is collecting non-perishable food items and household paper goods. All donations will remain in our local area and will be distributed by local agencies.

Donations may be dropped off during regular operating hours through Sunday, October 31. Collection sites are: the Portage Health main lobby and PortagePointe (Hancock main campus); Home Care and Hospice (Water Street, Hancock); Portage Health University Center (SDC); Ontonagon Community Health Center; Lake Linden Clinic; Portage Health Houghton (Sharon Avenue) and Calumet Rehab.

Ideal items for donation include commercially canned meats, fruits and vegetables, dry foods including cereal and box mixes, and paper products including disposable diapers. In 2009, Portage Health collected 1,626 pounds of food.

For more information about the Michigan Harvest Gathering, please call Portage Health Director of Volunteer Services Luci Sintkowski at (906) 483-1551.
