HANCOCK — Portage Health announces it has met its goal of adding 400 new names to the national Organ Donor Registry during Donor Drive 2010, a statewide campaign underway through the end of the year. In April, Portage Health pledged to add one new name to the registry for every two employees, an initiative led by the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.

"That was a lofty goal, as we have fewer than 800 employees, and many of them were already registered organ donors when we began the campaign," said Portage Health Dialysis Director Karen Kelley, spokesperson for Portage Health's donor drive. "We knew we had to extend our education about the registry to the larger community, and the people of the Copper Country did not let us down."

Through a varied and extensive marketing campaign including radio ads, special events, a designated donor drive computer station, presentations and collaboration with Michigan Technological University business students, Portage Health soon emerged as a healthcare leader in the state's Organ Donor Drive. In August, Gift of Life-Michigan Corporate Communications Director Tim Makinen presented Portage Health with a "Champion Award" for its efforts and announced that Portage Health led the state's small hospitals. Currently, with 411 registrations, Portage Health is sixth in the state, ahead of Henry Ford Hospital (23,000 employees), Spectrum Health of Western Michigan (17,500 employees) and Allegiance Health in Jackson (3,500 employees).

"Portage Health has been a model for how a hospital can embrace a public health campaign and benefit its community," Makinen said after learning Portage Health had reached its goal. "Its campaign has been smart, efficient and effective. In fact, Portage Health's number of donor registrations exceeds that of many much larger health institutions in Michigan. Portage Health should take pride in its success and take comfort in knowing that they have helped the residents of our state who are waiting for these life-saving, life-improving gifts."

Portage Health President and CEO Jim Bogan lauded Kelley and the Portage Health Marketing and Communications Team for their accomplishments.

"I am proud and happy that we have met this goal, but not surprised," Bogan said. "Our staff is dedicated, innovative and determined to make a difference in people's lives, whether that's a patient coming through our door or one of the 3,000 people waiting for a transplant. Our small size is not a measure of our heart."
