HANCOCK — Screenings, information and a welcoming environment drew a crowd to Portage Health's Men's Health Tune-Up Saturday. Like last year, organizers had to turn people away after reaching the maximum number of 75 registrants.

"It's such a deal that people really want to come and we were maxed out before our registration deadline this year." said organizer Arnie Kinnunen, Portage Health Community Outreach Coordinator. Kinnunen said despite the numbers, everything went even smoother this year than at last year's inaugural Men's Health Tune-Up.

"We listened to people's suggestions about drawing the blood earlier and we had extra staff on hand to make sure that went more efficiently," he said. "We had a lot of volunteers and great staff who helped make each part of this event a success."

For $20, attendees received cholesterol, glucose and lipids results, bone density and blood pressure screenings, a hearing test and new this year, a prostate cancer screening (PSA). Urologist Dr. Andrew Jahoda was the day's keynote speaker, giving an informative presentation on prostate health and other men's health issues. A wild game lunch included duck, venison sausage, salmon and smoked late trout. A healthy cooking demonstration, ergonomics demonstration and a chance to win raffle prizes also drew participants in.

"My wife encouraged me to come, but really, she didn't have to do much persuading," said James Gondek, 59, of Painesdale. Gondek took advantage of all of the screenings, including a bone density screening which he had not had before. "My numbers were good for that, so maybe that means what I'm doing at home for my health is working," he said.

Gondek also said Dr. Jahoda provided a very worthwhile presentation. "It was very interesting and well worth the entrance fee," he said. "I believe I'll be back next year."
