HANCOCK — More than 100 people started 2010 in a healthy way by participating in Portage Health's Second Annual New Year's Eve Fun Run and Walk on December 31.

Despite snow and cold, everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, said Portage Health Community Outreach Coordinator Arnie Kinnunen.

"It was nice to see such a wide age span," he said. "Participants included families pushing strollers, parents pulling their children in sleds, and kids of all ages. Many people brought their pets along."

Organizers said although some participants took in some good-natured competition by seeing who could complete the most 2-mile laps in the allotted time, for the most part the event was just a breath of fresh air during a busy holiday season.

Megan Killian, President of the Copper Country Running Club who co-sponsored the event, said the variety of raffle prizes donated by local businesses was a big draw for participants.

"These included gift certificates, fitness apparel, magazine subscriptions, you name it," she said. "Without our generous sponsors, this event would not have been a success."

Healthy snacks and refreshments were provided by Portage Health Nutrition Services following the event.
