HANCOCK — Portage Health is proud to announce that the PortagePointe senior living community has received the top rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
On Dec. 18, CMS released its first quality ratings for each of the nation’s 15,000 nursing homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid.
PortagePointe received five stars, the highest possible rating, which indicates that the facility is much above average. The senior living community in Hancock is the only nursing home in Houghton county to receive five stars, and one of just seven facilities in the Upper Peninsula to receive the top rating. About 12 percent of the nursing homes rated by CMS received five stars.
Facilities were assigned star ratings from a low of one star to a high of five stars by CMS based on health inspection surveys, staffing information and quality of care measures. The ratings are available to the public on the agency’s Nursing Home Compare Web at www.medicare.gov.
PortagePointe, a senior living community that includes five distinct homes for 60 individuals, embraces the Eden philosophy, an innovative approach to caring for elders that was formally adopted in 2002. The Eden philosophy seeks to provide human habitats where vibrant, vigorous living continues for individuals.
