Chef Mark to present Saturday at Celebrate the U.P.

“Chef Mark” Pittillo, nutrition services director at Portage Health, is one of more than a dozen expert speakers presenting this weekend at the annual Celebrate the U.P. event. The event begins Friday night, and continues Saturday with breakout sessions throughout the day, all taking place at the Jutila Center in Hancock.

Pittillo150px“This is an honor for me,” Pittillo said. “I’ll be talking about something I’m very passionate about – farm to school, hospital and restaurant.”

The presentation will be at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in room 722 of the Jutila Center. Pittillo will be talking about his experience bringing fresh produce to Portage Health, and local schools.

“One of the things I’m most excited to share is details on our new agreement with Adams Township Schools for next school year,” he said. “The agreement will provide a completely locally grown menu every Wednesday at the school district.”

That includes meat, produce, fish and more that was grown in the Keweenaw, delivered to the school and prepared by the staff at the district.

Portage Health Fitness Center welcomes new personal trainer

The Portage Health Fitness Center has added Personal Trainer Lee Naugle to its staff. Naugle is a Finlandia University graduate, and is now accepting new clients.

Naugle, Lee image“I am excited to jumpstart my training career here at Portage Health,” Naugle said. “I have a passion for fitness and exercise, and I’m exciting to be working somewhere where my coworkers share the same passion.”

Naugle is a Certified Personal Trainer (International Sports Sciences Association), Certified Group Fitness Instructor (American Council on Exercise) and has a Physical Therapy Assistant associates degree from Finlandia, where he was a two-sport athlete. He currently serves as an assistant coach for the Lions baseball program.

“My goal is to motivate my clients to achieve their new healthy lifestyle, or continue to pursue their fitness goals with my background in exercise and fitness,” Naugle said. “I will help my clients learn a passion for fitness, and help them have fun doing it.”

Naugle has completed numerous half marathons, a marathon and a Tough Mudder competition.

Dr. Sharon Stoll joins Calumet Family Health Center

Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is proud to welcome Sharon Stoll, MD, to its staff. Dr. Stoll will provide a full spectrum of primary care healthcare services, and is currently accepting new patients.

Stoll Sharon image“I am excited to get back to offering primary care services in the Keweenaw,” said Dr. Stoll, who was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula.

Dr. Stoll earned her doctorate at Michigan State University, and is fellowship trained in anti-aging and regenerative medicine.

She will be seeing patients at the Calumet Family Health Center, which is operated by Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center in partnership with Portage Health. Dr. Stoll will focus on providing high quality, confidential and holistic healthcare to residents of the Copper Country.

“I enjoy working with patients to find the balance of conventional and holistic medicine that suits their personal preferences and needs,” she said. “On and off the clock, I am passionate and eager to share the health benefits of good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.”

Harrington appointed Marketing Director at Portage Health

Victor Harrington has been appointed Marketing Director at Portage Health.

Harrington-Victor“Victor has been an integral part of our marketing team for the past seven years,” said Jim Bogan, President and CEO of Portage Health. “I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Harrington is taking over the role from Kevin Store, who is transitioning to his new role as Executive Director of the reconstituted Portage Health Foundation.

“We want to thank Kevin for his many years of service at Portage Health,” Bogan said.

Harrington was raised in the Copper Country, and is an graduate of Finlandia University. His transition to Marketing Director is already underway.

“In the Marketing Department at Portage Health, our priority is to accurately and effectively promote our services in an effort to keep healthcare delivery right here at home,” Harrington said. “I look forward to continuing this effort, while working with the excellent staff and providers we have at Portage Health.”

Rehab hires pediatric occupational therapist

Portage Health Rehab is proud to welcome Elizabeth Miller, OTRL, to its staff. Miller is providing pediatric outpatient services at Portage Health Rehab’s Houghton clinic, and contracted services through the Copper Country Intermediate School District.

Miller, Liz image“I believe occupational therapy is a profession that requires compassion, sensitivity and understanding to better help improve the quality of life for all individuals,” Miller said. “My goal is to provide innovative therapies to help promote quality of life, and to inspire and motivate patients and their families.”

Prior to joining Portage Health’s staff Miller worked at the White Pine Rehabilitation and Care Center in Howell, Michigan, and at Hillsdale Community Health Center in Hillsdale, Michigan. She also spent time working at Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Miller has experience in inpatient rehab, school systems and outpatient clinics specializing in children with sensory processing dysfunction. She completed her post-graduate studies at Western Michigan University, and is an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Hines named VP of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer

Jim Bogan, President and CEO of Portage Health, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Beth Hines, DO, FACOEP, FACEP, to Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of Portage Health as of January 1, 2014.

Dr. Mary Beth HinesIn her new role, Dr. Hines will work closely with the medical staff leadership and the executive management team.

“Mary Beth brings to Portage Health her experience in different areas of healthcare,” said Bogan. “We look forward to working with her as we move forward with our partnership with LifePoint Hospitals.”

Dr. Hines has been serving patients in the Portage Health Trauma Center for more than a decade, including time spent as the department’s director. She is board certified in emergency medicine and medical toxicology, and will continue to serve patients at the Portage Health Trauma Center.

Prior to signing on at Portage Health, she served as the director of the emergency department at the former Keweenaw Memorial Hospital, and as the director of education for the emergency medicine residency program at Michigan State University.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me, and an exciting time for the hospital and our community,” Dr. Hines said. “We have already initiated the process with LifePoint Hospitals to craft new services for our community. These expanded services will lead to opportunities for care that our community hasn’t had before.”

Dr. Hines will join the Portage Health executive management team, which includes Bogan, recently appointed Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Susan Binkley, Vice President of Quality Management Betty MacInnes, and Vice President of Patient Services Deb Young.

Binkley named VP of Finance and CFO at Portage Health

Portage Health has named Susan Binkley its Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Binkley, who has been at Portage Health for more than a decade, will officially take over the position on Jan. 1, 2014.

Susan Binkley“We welcome Susan to her new position after working at Portage Health since 1998,” said Jim Bogan, president and CEO of Portage Health.

Binkley has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare finance, accounting, reimbursement, budgeting and revenue cycle. She’s worked as the director of finance and decision support analyst at Portage Health.

“I’m honored to have received this opportunity to help make Portage Health a leader in healthcare delivery,” Binkley said. “I’m looking forward to working with our dedicated, and highly skilled staff to face today’s challenges in healthcare.”

Previous to joining Portage Health, Binkley worked at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, Michigan, University of Cincinnati Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and at Abbott Labs in Chicago. She earned her bachelor’s degree at The University of Illinois.

Binkley is taking over for Brian Donahue, who has decided to pursue other career opportunities after nearly 15 years at Portage Health.

“We wish Brian the best of luck,” Bogan said. “He was a wonderful asset for our organization and our community.”
