Portage Health Fitness Center expands outdoor group exercise schedule

Bringing the workout outside seems to be the theme for the Portage Health Fitness Center, which has released its 2013 Summer Group Exercise Schedule.

“When we introduced the Adventure Bootcamp to the community in the summer of 2011 the feedback was incredible, people absolutely loved it,” said Angela Luskin, community health coordinator at Portage Health. “In 2012 we expanded it to fit many more people. This year, we’re expanding it again, and adding two additional outdoor classes as well.”

This year another bootcamp has been added for the 40-and-over population. The new session is called Boomer Bootcamp, and will be held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7 a.m.

“This group will be focused on cardio and weight workouts that will challenge and increase balance, endurance and strength,” Luskin said. “It’s really important for the 40-and-over population to live an active lifestyle, and this class will help them develop a good foundation.”

The usual Adventure Bootcamp runs Monday through Thursday, during two morning sessions, 6:30 to 7:15 and 7:30 to 8:15. These outdoor group sessions travel throughout the Houghton-Hancock area with mostly outdoor workouts. Bootcamp is $200 for the summer, and runs from June 10 to August 8.

Also going outdoors this summer are zumba and yoga classes. These will be at the East Houghton Waterfront Park, which shares a parking lot with Super 8 on the Portage Lake Shipping Canal.

“What better place to exercise than right on the shore of the canal,” Luskin said.

Zumba is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Yoga classes will be 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, and 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. on Monday.

Other classes for the summer session include indoor cycling, cycle fusion, core cycle, TRX/kettlebell fusion, core crunch, strength and tone, and Pilates plus. The summer session begins on June 3. Classes are $6 per session, or $72 for a 16-class punch card. Discounted prices are available for Fitness Center members and Portage Health employees.
