NHPCOTo help provide care and support that reflect the important contributions made by veterans, Portage Health Home Care & Hospice has become a national partner of We Honor Veterans, a campaign developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“By participating in the We Honor Veterans program, we are making a commitment to help ensure all veterans and their families receive exceptional end-of-life care,” said Marianne Berghefer, Portage Health Hospice volunteer and bereavement coordinator.

As a We Honor Veterans Partner, Portage Health Home Care & Hospice will implement ongoing veteran-centered education for their staff and hospice volunteers to help improve the care they provide to the Veterans they proudly serve.

By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, Portage Health Home Care & Hospice is better able to accompany and guide veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending.

In cases where there might be some specific needs related to the veteran’s military service, combat experience or other traumatic events, Portage Health Home Care & Hospice will find tools to help support those they are caring for.

“All hospices are serving veterans, but often aren’t aware of that person’s service in the armed forces,” said J. Donald Schumacher, NHPCO president and CEO. “Through We Honor Veterans, we are taking a giant step forward in helping hospice and palliative care providers understand and serve veterans at the end of life and work more effectively with VA medical facilities in their communities.”

The resources of We Honor Veterans focuses on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment, coupled with veteran-centric education of healthcare staff caring for Veterans. To learn more about We Honor Veterans please visit

Dr. Khokhar earns board certification

HANCOCK – Dr. Mansoor Khokhar joined Portage Health in July 2011, and in October, Dr. Khokhar was successful in becoming board certified.

Dr. Khokhar“I have that sense of achievement for hitting a target that I’ve worked hard at for a long time,” he said. “I’m enjoying the satisfaction of knowing my effort and hard work has formally been recognized.”

Dr. Khokhar, a hospitalist at Portage Health, has been in the medical field for more than 28 years.

“With a previous background in surgery, this learning, training and qualification from a medicine point of view has given me a more in-depth appreciation of the disease process that we encounter and the treatment options that are available to best suit the patient,” he said. “I know each patient has their own feelings, impressions, and views of their disease, the treatment and the after effects. I try to provide answers and information to all these aspects, not only to the patient, but to the family as well.”

Dr. Khokhar came to the Copper Country after time spent at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, a 550-bed operation.

“My program was very supportive and understanding, considering the fact that my training and style was originally surgery oriented,” he said. “I had to change a lot, and the faculty in that program helped me in achieving certification.”
