In 2010 Portage Health became a pioneer amongst rural hospitals by offering molecular diagnostics at a local level, and since then the offerings have continued to grow. By offering this advanced technology at a local level, the hospital has kept thousands of dollars of money in the Copper Country community, while helping the health of the community with faster, more accurate results.
GeneXpert Machine
The GeneXpert tests for the presence of bacteria, including that of infectious life-threatening diseases such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ("MRSA"), and H1N1, enabling doctors to make quicker and more informed treatment decisions. BD Probetec ET
The new machine allows Portage Health to do testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea right on campus. The in-house testing will save approximately $90,000 a year. More importantly for patients, we can have diagnostics done within two or three hours if needed, instead of waiting until the next day, or longer.
