History of Portage Health StructuresSince 1896 we have been the quality leader in Copper Country healthcare. Many respected, independent organizations nationwide have backed up our quality claims. This includes recognitions from The Joint Commission, Blue Cross Blue Shield and the American College of Surgeons to name a few.

We are proud of those recognitions. We are even more proud of the feedback we consistently receive from our patients. The numbers show us well above national, state and regional averages. These industry standard rankings, called HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems), are something we’re immensely proud of.

While we’re proud of these numbers, our work is never done. We’re always looking for ways to improve the quality healthcare we provide. Board Certified DocsThat includes hiring only board-certified physicians. It includes hiring specialists who have completed advanced fellowship training. It also includes the hiring of Baptist Leadership Group to help our staff continue to improve our patient experience.

In 2013, in a move to secure a stronger future, Portage Health began searching for a partner. That led the Portage Health Board of Directors to sign a definitive agreement to form a joint venture with LifePoint Hospitals®. The agreement includes $60 million in capital investments over the next 10 years to expand and enhance healthcare services in the Copper Country. Through these investments and shared governance, we seek to keep pace with your healthcare expectations.

  • "Here For You" Moments

Below are some comments that our patients have shared illustrating how Portage Health staff has been "here for them." Share your story through the above sweepstakes.

"While I have excellent hearing when it is quiet, I lose nearly 80% of that hearing with background noise. Over the years, every specialist I’ve seen has told me there is nothing that can be done to help me. When it came to the point where I had difficulty performing the most important part of my job — communication — I tried one more time and was fortunate to meet Melissa Collard at Portage Health Audiology. Melissa went above and beyond to identify and help me understand my problem, which is actually an auditory processing disorder. She allowed me to try several different sets of hearing aids over several months while consulting with other professionals to not only find a way to help me manage my problem, but also the costs related to the hearing aids. Melissa provided me with an invaluable and life-changing solution for which I will forever be grateful.” —K.A., Hancock
"Dr. Peer helped my 6 year old son when he injured his knee. He has a wonderful bedside manner and was able to entrust my son who is very shy. Adam Kerry was also spectacular with one compliment, calling my son a natural with crutches.” — H.M., Hancock
“Portage Health supports the people of the Copper Country, including me, by sponsoring events to help make ours a healthier community. From the Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival to the Turkey Trot and other events which encourage physical activity and promote a healthy lifestyle, Portage Health makes a difference, proving they really are 'Here for You.’” — K.K., Laurium
"When I was pregnant with my first child I attended a class called feeding choices for your infant. It was a wonderful class and I learned so much. I am proud that our hospital offers informative classes that help make the best choices for your children.” — H.M., Hancock
"I have had a lifelong fear of blood draws and can now say that, after having blood drawn by your compassionate lab technicians, I barely even flinch any more. They are wonderful and well-skilled!” — C.B., Houghton
"My daughter's favorite part of visiting the hospital is getting stickers.” — H.M., Hancock
“The time I had to bring my son to the ER because he was having severe belly pains and vomiting, the ED staff was so extremely patient with him. He was very nervous to have an IV and they calmly talked to him and made sure he was ready before they did it. They also communicated great with me … I was never left wondering what was going on. Dr. Sarazin made sure I knew exactly what was happening and what they would need to do. They also constantly reminded my son what a good and brave boy he was and before he left they gave him 'Muscles the moose' which he was very proud to get.” — L.R., Atlantic Mine
"I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with the billing department on more than one occation. The sorting out of bills is complicated to say the least. Every inquiry I had has been met by kind, polite and understanding individuals who work with you to figure out the billing process.” — H.M., Hancock
"My dad, who is 78 years old, fell and broke his leg at the end of April of this year. He received wonderful care from the time he was admitted until his final appointment with Dr. Peer. There was always someone available to answer any questions that my parents had which made it a bit easier for all of us during this difficult time. Thanks to everyone!” — M.W., Mass City
"Mercedes Maki goes above and beyond her call of duty and made my experience very comforting and easy.” — E.B., Chassell
"The first time I visited the ER was with my husband two weeks before our first child was born, 7 years ago. My husband injured his hand and it required stitches. That night we were treated quickly and efficiently by a kind and wonderful staff that worked together well. I have had the misfortune to visit the ER on a few occasions following that first visit and every visit has been like the first. I am proud to have such wonder ER doctors, nurses and staff working together to make everyone better.” — H.M., Hancock
"I go to Portage Health for my MRIs and staff there are the best. They treat you as a person...not a patient.” — M.K., Marquette
"When our loved one turned up in Portage Health's care shortly before Christmas, nothing prepared us for the much too quick downward spiral. But through it all the wonderful, caring and exquisite staff comforted us and kept us well informed through it all. I don't think they even know how much that meant to our family and how much it helped us through the very sad process. We feel forever indebted for their kindness and wonderful care.” — T.A., Tamarack City
"Portage has always been a great hospital to work for and I'm very proud to be employed here!” — A.G., Painsdale
“With every birth of my 6 kids the nurses have been AWESOME!!! Much THANKS to them!!!” — C.M., Painsdale
"I have never heard anyone infer that 'it's not my job.' Everyone who comes in contact with me as a inpatient always asks if there is anything they can do for me and they make it clear that they mean it. Respiratory staff has brought me water, Radiology staff has removed my dinner tray, and Phlebotomy staff has adjusted my lights. Gotta love the Portage staff.” — M.C., Hubbell
"I was having my 2nd cesarean and was very nervous about the surgery. My OB doctor was thorough and fantastic. She very much helped me ease my fears. After delivery the nurses were exceptionally helpful. Thank you Portage Health, for being here for me!” — A.R., Atlantic Mine
