The Portage Health Accent Modification Program focuses on improving the clarity of communication for native and non-native English speakers. Certified Compton P-ESL Instructor Amy Haske, MA, CCC-SLP, will work with patients in a comfortable one-on-one atmosphere to improve pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation of speech.
An accent is the difference in pronunciation from one person to the next. Everyone has an accent to a certain extent. Accents are formed from a person’s early childhood, and are dependent a person’s background. Most important to the formation of an accent is the region or country where they grew up. The easiest example is to notice how people from southern states such as Texas and Alabama, talk much differently than residents of the Upper Peninsula.
There is nothing wrong with an accent. In fact, for many people it’s a point of pride. Yoopers often take pride in their accent. Read more about the U.P. accent, referred to in this article as a dialect because it also includes additional words and phrases, on Wikipedia.
Some people with accents have anxiety and/or difficulty communicating with people because of their accent. At times, this can be a roadblock for people, especially as they’re moving to a new region. For those in education, business or healthcare fields, it can be especially important to modify a strong accent.
Working with Amy Haske, MA, CCC-SLP, residents of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula will be able to focus specifically on their accent to find ways to improve pronunciation to make verbal communication clearer and less stressful.
Amy will examine each vowel and consonant to determine what sounds are different, and how to change the sound to closer match the sounds of standard American English. Through the individualized training, many people will learn to be more effective in their communication, and therefore more confident in their delivery, which can help them personally and professionally in a new region.
